Thank you for bringing that up. I have known of cases where undocumented immigrants witnessed a crime or an auto accident, or were the victims thereof, but feared to give statements to the police, and justice suffered. Lack of legal recourse by other unnecessarily criminalized people is similarly problematic.
The other benefit of such legalization would be to make it harder for police and the justice system to arrest, convict, fine, imprison, and enslave random people. Since the war on drugs was finally admitted to have been devised as a way to harass and imprison black people and hippies (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/nixon-drug-war-racist_us_56f16a0ae4b03a640a6bbda1?ir=Black+Voices§ion=us_black-voices&utm_hp_ref=black-voices), it is more obviously than ever illegitimate.
