... Is anyone reading this living in a swing state (or a swing district of Maine or Nebraska*) and not planning to vote for Obama? If so, care to talk about it? I promise to try not to be obnoxious, despite the fact that I care very much.

* Maine and Nebraska assign electoral votes individually by congressional district. Plus two more for the statewide majority winner.

I certainly hope that if anyone does want to talk about this, I hope they do.

That said, something that concerns me quite a lot is if one lives in a swing state they have probably been hit up by so many canvassers at this point that they're sick of the whole damn thing. Not sure I'd blame them. I quipped a few days ago that if I were being bothered every day about my vote choice I would post a sign saying "Canvassers will be roasted and eaten." The candidates aren't being ugly (with some notable exceptions from the GOP camp), but the supporters are being rather nasty about it in many places. I've never heard of so many cases of sign stealing, vandalism, and the like. I've heard it said that people think if this election is worth winning at all, it's worth doing so at any cost and by any means necessary, including dishonest and dishonorable ones.

I too would be scared to live under a McCain administration, but it does nothing to solidify the base of Democratic power if we got there underhandedly.

Or "Canvassers should provide me a prime porterhouse steak if they want me to give you more than 2 seconds of my time."

I live in Nevada, in a particularly hard-fought area that's received recent visits from both vice-presidential candidates. I really like my No Solicitors sign on the front door right about now!

Combine that with TiVo to skip the nonstop attack ads, and all I'd need to do is unplug my land line and I'd be living in peace. I answer it, though, since I enjoy responding to pollsters and shifting their numbers a quarter-point in the right direction.

I don't usually answer my land line, and watch hardly any broadcast TV. I only know about the nasty campaigning because I read about it in blogs (well, and because the candidates wouldn't shut up about it during the second debate). And I seem to suddenly be living in a newly-discovered swing state, even.

Of course, I also voted last week (the early voting numbers in NC right now are humongous), so nobody would want to talk to me anyway.

Actually, your No Solicitors sign does not apply to canvassers, since we aren't selling anything.

I'm sure you've already heard this, but just in case, if you vote early in Nevada, the canvassers will stop knocking on your door. Every day, the Secretary of State sends a list of people who have already voted to the campaigns, and their names are taken off the lists.

Well, I haven't gotten any knocks on my door. I wasn't aware that the sign had any force, actually - I regard it as more of a notification to potential door-knockers that they will be told to piss off, which does indeed apply to both salespeople and canvassers. (Though not Obama canvassers since you're the good guys.)

I'm heading out to vote now, actually - would have done so earlier but was waiting for Molly to research the local races and tell me how to vote on those.

When I canvass, I always ignore "no soliciting" signs because they do not apply to political canvassing.

I also very strongly believe that being contacted by political campaigns is one's responsibility in exchange for living in a democracy, along with jury duty and taxes.
