Repairs and links
Jun. 13th, 2015 08:33 pmIn early February, I mentioned my new dashboard camera. In early April, it paid for itself many times over. The car next to mine in a parking lot swiped my car on their way out, and left the scene. I was in the store at the time, but my dash cam had caught most of their license plate as I parked. Long story short: Their insurance paid for the repairs. (If you want an affordable one, let me save you some time: I did a lot of research, and eventually bought this camera. If you find it cheaper, it's probably counterfeit. Order a Micro SD card separately. My 32GB card holds just over five hours of 1080p video.)
If you appreciated my project, "The Lack of Reason For God," feel free to upvote my reviews of Keller's book on Amazon and at Barnes & Noble so that, hopefully, fewer people will be scammed into buying it. (Regardless of whether you agree with my views: My Christian readers may be incentivized to prevent their fellow Christians from spending money and effort on this futile means of gaining converts. I get nothing personal out of such votes, and seek no recognition; I'm just trying to make the world a better place.)
Repairing our garage door opener was way more of a pain in the ass than it had any right to be, and took three days (not counting waiting for the parts I ordered). I had never done it before, so I wasn't counting on the precise alignment of the chain being such an annoying issue even after the repairs were completed.
Once again, I've accumulated a store of links to share, with poor bookkeeping regarding credit for them. (Largely, this is due to accommodating old browser bugs regarding social media. I wind up reading linked articles in a different browser, often after the linking post is off screen or closed.)
The Unwritten Rules of Journalism (On the state of science reporting.)
Eyewitnesses: The Baltimore Riots Didn't Start the Way You Think (The Baltimore police went to great lengths to start the riots. Isn't inciting a riot illegal?)
Hawkeye sings about his super powers.
Controlling Japanese Barberry Helps Stop Spread of Tick-Borne Diseases (Japanese barberry causes soil changes that encourage ticks. "When we measure the presence of ticks carrying the Lyme spirochete (Borrelia burgdorferi) we find 120 infected ticks where Barberry is not contained, 40 ticks per acre where Barberry is contained, and only 10 infected ticks where there is no Barberry." Also mouse synergy. Cutting down barberry doesn't work, but propane torches and herbicides do.)
"Black Widow" Trailer (SNL) (Sadly, the trailer for the new Supergirl show looks like it's really going this route.)
I found This Sinfest strip powerful.
The Tale of My Daughters' Penises (Read this somewhere where you can, with impunity, hoot and cry with laughter.)
... And I Show You How Deep The Rabbit Hole Goes (Someone extrapolated stories from a Tumblr quiz. It starts neat, and gets amazing. Do read the whole thing.) (Thanks, Rigel!)
An example of the Festival of Bad Ad Hoc Hypotheses (organized by folks including Zach Weinersmith, author of SMBC)
Extreme baby animal cuteness here, here, and here.
