Entertaining myself during a ride, I wondered whether I could think of any triple homophones: Sets of three identical sounding words, all spelled differently. (e.g., rays / raze / raise.) I started a list, and came up with fourteen sets. How many can you think of?

(Of course other people have thought of this too, so no web searches! Comments are screened, so you can post your answers if you like.)

No words here, except to note that these sorts of word-triples make for fun connective-sets in writing other puzzles, and so I keep a file of them around for use in authoring other puzzles. A favored trick is writing crossword-style clues in sets of n that all key homophones. So:

  • A component of language

  • Falls apart, as a rope

  • Describing "A Million Little Pieces" and "Bright Shiny Morning"

(Note: At least one of these is total weak-sauce.)
